San Diego (Saen Dieigou in Spanish and San Djego in Spanish, Saint Didacus) is a city in the US state of California, situated on the Pacific coast of Mexico border. It is the eighth most populous city in the United States with 13,869,932 inhabitants in 2020 [11] and the second largest in California after Los Angeles. San Diego is known for its mild climate year round, its natural deep-water harbor, its expansive beaches and parks, its longstanding collaboration with the US. Navy and Marine Corps and its recent development as a health, biotechnology and development center. It is the County seat of San Diego County and the fifth-largest county in the country, with 33,383,330 estimated residents in 2019.
San Diego, home of the Kumeyaay, is often referred to as the birthplace of California, as it was the first site that was visited and settled on the west coast of the United States by Europeans. The Presidio and Mission San Diego de Alcala was founded in 1769 and was the first European settlement in California.
San Diego became part of the newly proclaimed Mexican empire in 1821 which was reformed two years later as the First Mexican Republic. In 1848, California became part of the United States after the Mexican-American War and enrolled in the Union as state in 1850.
The main economic engines of San Diego are military and defence-related activities, tourism, international trade, research and manufacturing. Its economic center is the San Diego-Tijuana metropolitan area, the Western Hemisphere’s second most populous cross-border metropolitan area after Detroit-Windsor, where an estimated 4,922,723 people lived in 2012. Its main airport, San Diego International Airport, is the busiest single-lane airport in the United States.
